Dual-Imaging LWD Technology Helped Drill a Horizontal Well Faster

Published: 03/31/2022

Operation Highlight

  • Acquired high-resolution dual-LWD quality images (ultrasonic and electromagnetic images) with no limit on drilling ROP.
  • High-amplitude ultrasonic images provide more detailed features, while low-amplitude ultrasonic images have less image noise. TerraSphere highdefinition dual-imaging-while-drilling service provides high- and low-amplitude images with a one pass collar.
  • Ultrasonic caliper provided real-time 8-bin calipers for 3D borehole evaluation. It provides fine quantitative caliper from LWD. A high-resolution memory caliper processed to 180 sectors.
(Figure A) Shows resistivity static compared to dynamic and ultrasonic static and dynamic figure. (Refer to SPE-204870-MS). (Figure B) Fault interpretation confirmed by both resistivity and ultrasonic images. The fault has minor displacement. (Refer to SPE-204870-MS).

Background
Designing a horizontal well in unconventional plays includes logging and geosteering requirements that challenge drilling engineering design. In this instance, the technical team needed high-resolution resistivity images to support the geosteering operation and to interpret fractures, geological features, and events in the formation—while drilling using oil-based mud to overcome drilling conditions.
